Cleveland Browns' wide receiver Joe Jurevicius recently contracted a staph infection following a surgery to repair his knee. This makes him the sixth Brown in the past four years to be diagnosed with a staph infection.
The team expects him to be ready for practice in May and June, as reported by SI.com: "At some point following that procedure, he acquired an infection from which he is recovering. He has been rehabilitating here in Cleveland and is expected to take part in the team's offseason activities," the team said in the statement. Other Browns players who have contracted staph infections over the last four years are center LeCharles Bentley, tight end Kellen Winslow, wide receiver Braylon Edwards, and former Browns safety Brian Russell and linebacker Ben Taylor.  Infection-control officials from the Clinic visited the Browns' facility in October 2005 and July 2006 for basic prevention purposes. The Browns also had their facility treated last year with a special anti-staph agent and are vigilant about taking precautions. Eileen Sheil, a spokeswoman from the Cleveland Clinic, claimed that the infection did not occur under their care. The receiver’s agent, Neil Cornrich, could not be reached for comment. Going into the 2008 season, Jurevicius is expected to be the No. 3 receiver since the Browns signed free agent Donte Stallworth formerly of the New England Patriots.
