If you’ve ever watched “The T.O. Show” you know reality TV and football just don’t mix. San Diego Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman found this out the hard way. Merriman was arrested early Sunday morning, charged with battery and false imprisonment of his girlfriend, former reality diva Tila Tequila.
According to San Diego County police, Tequila, whose real name is Tila Nguyen, called police from Merriman’s home in Poway, Calif., just north of San Diego. Tequila signed a citizen’s arrest warrant charging Merriman.
The San Diego Chargers issued a statement Sunday afternoon regarding Merriman. “It’s disappointing to hear about the issue involving Shawne Merriman,” Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith said. “We’ll continue to monitor the situation and let the legal process run its course.”
Sources reported late Sunday afternoon that Merriman contends Tequila was intoxicated and he was trying to stop her from driving. Official statements from both sides are expected early this week.
Merriman’s arrest will be another sheet on Commissioner Roger Goodell’s stack of legal papers to sort through. The NFL has a strict player conduct policy, but it is likely that Goodell won’t get involved until a court has ruled.
