The University of Hawaii will reportedly receive the highest payout of any non-Bowl Championship Series school for playing in last year’s Sugar Bowl when they are given the $4.4 million they were promised.
After expenses, the money is much less, but it’s still a lot, as reported by Yahoo! Sports: Hawaii is expected to net about $2.2 million after expenses associated with playing in the New Year’s Day game against Georgia, school and Western Athletic Conference officials said. The eight other conference members will each receive $410,555. Georgia, which beat Hawaii, 41-10, will earn $17 million for the Southeastern Conference, one of the six BCS leagues. WAC commissioner Karl Benson said with the conference having teams in back-to-back years represented in BCS bowls “is a very strong statement about the WAC.â€
Hawaii athletic director Jon Donovan claimed the school received much more than a monetary award from playing in the game. Last year, Boise State was paid $4.3 million for playing in the Fiesta Bowl against Oklahoma in one of the most entertaining bowl games in recent history.
